Sump Pumps – Remove Water From Your Crawlspace
The word sump means pit. Sump pumps are water pumps that sit in the lowest area of your home’s basement or crawlspace and transfer the water to the exterior of your home where it can safely be diverted away from the foundation.
In crawlspace water remediation, this pump is used when the lowest area in the crawlspace is below the exterior grade and any collected water can’t flow directly through the French drain by gravity to the exterior and away from the foundation.
The sump pump works in conjunction with an interior crawlspace French drainage system. The collection drain pipes around the crawlspace’s interior slope towards a large collection vessel placed in the ground lower than the French drains. The pump sits in the bottom of the collection vessel and when the water reaches a certain level a float pops up and starts the pump which pushes that collected water up, out and it is then diverted by some means away from the homes foundation.
In crawlspaces the sump pump is usually used in conjunction with other moisture remediation systems like French drains, vapor barriers, dehumidifiers, HVAC condensate lines or total encapsulations.
It is a part of a complete system to help maintain your home’s healthy balance of wood and air moisture content.
